The Organization Project with a Secret

My latest client needed a little help to get unstuck. Her husband had started to organize bins that he pulled out of their storage area in the basement, but as always happens with families, other priorities interrupted and the project got put aside.

He scores points for starting though, right ladies?

I jumped on a video call for a virtual consultation, and this is what I saw. "This is actually not that bad", I thought.

Do you see the secret yet?

I arrived and reviewed the goals with my clients. Their young teens are getting older and the family wants a multi-functional space that both kids and parents can enjoy. The parents want a media room for watching movies, and the kids want a place to play video games and relax. Planned upgrades are new flooring and furniture. My job was to organize and free up space for the upgrades.

My first step was to sort through the items and organize by, you guessed it:

what to keep, what to donate, what to discard

I took everything out of the bins and sorted accordingly. Anything that might have had sentimental value or I thought the client would want to inspect before discarding, I placed in boxes and set aside. Then I wiped down all the bins with an all-purpose cleaner to ensure items were being placed back in clean containers. I found a few dead spiders along the way -- occupational hazard.

Here are a few bins after being reorganized.

(this client really likes to entertain)

Once all the bins were filled and organized, they went back into the storage area

on their designated shelves.

Once everything was back in its proper home in the storage area, the tables were wiped down, folded up, and put away. That's when I found the secret.

A fireplace was hiding there the whole time!

Remember, if you can't see it, you won't use it.

This was a fun and rewarding project. If you have a secret you'd like help to uncover, give me a call. I'm always up for an adventure.

I like to have everything organized and tidy, but this basement organization project was at the bottom of the to do list for months. And since it was in the basement, it was out of sight, out of mind. After months of working and schooling from home, our family decided it was time to finally turn our basement into a gaming/media room. The procrastination had to end! Lisa did an amazing job sorting through our mess, organizing and labeling everything. It’s such a relief to have this done, and I didn’t have to do it! Now we are on to phase 2 of our project. Flooring and furniture are next. If you have a room or garage that needs organization,…
