How many of you out there have old brass fireplace doors that you've wanted to update but just can't seem to find the time to make it happen? I'm one of those people. For twenty years I looked at my brass fireplace and thought "man, that would look so much better if it were painted black." Twenty. Years.
I don't own that house anymore, and I never did get those doors painted. But I finally got to live out that dream this week through a client. They, too, had been wanting to paint their brass fireplace doors, but just couldn't squeeze it into their busy schedule. This is where Luna Sky swooped in to the rescue.
This client has a gorgeous fireplace with a stone surround and slate hearth, but the update needed to be completed by painting the doors black. With a few supplies from the hardware store (see affiliate links below) and some elbow grease, in just a few hours the fireplace was transformed into the gorgeous main feature of this room.
This is an easy update but does require a fair amount of preparation to ensure the finish is top quality and will last. Before painting, make sure the area is well ventilated and wear a face mask rated for paint vapors (one is recommended below). Cleaning and sanding are of the utmost importance to ensure the paint goes on smoothly and adheres well.
Once the glass and surrounding stone is taped and covered, begin painting by spraying 2 to 3 very light coats. Wait 15 minutes between coats.
Once the paint is fully dry, carefully remove the tape to reveal the final result.
